Singapore isn’t known as a beer town, and with alcohol taxed as heavily as it is here, a pint is never cheap. But the craft scene has grown well beyond hotel bars: taprooms in old shophouses, a stall in a hawker centre, neighbourhood places far from the CBD. Here are the ones I’ve been to and loved, and the ones still on my list.
Been there, loved it
- Elixir Code: a great bar, and quietly dog friendly. They don’t advertise it, but dogs are welcome.
- Brewerkz, Riverside Point
- Druggists, Jalan Besar
- Smith Street Taps, the craft beer stall inside Chinatown Complex hawker centre
- American Taproom, Waterloo Street: a great selection. A bit pricier than most, but they have happy hours.
- Yeast Side, at both King Albert Park and Farrer Park: great pizzas. Note that they’re closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The King Albert Park branch is dog friendly.
- Get Some, Clementi: dog friendly and conveniently located, near West Coast Vet Care (my dog Charlie’s first vet). (727 Clementi West Street 2, #01-282)
- Almost Famous, in the atmospheric confines of CHIJMES
- Taps N Timber Taproom, The Rail Mall: a great replacement for the dearly departed 16 Ounces. Dog friendly.
Still on my list
- MALT Craft Beer Bar
- Upward Taproom, Club Street
- The Otherside
- Bellies Craft Beer
- Locality
- George Town Tze Char and Craft Beer
- Tapout Craft Beers
The west side of the island is thin on taprooms. If you know a good one out that way, tell me.
